Poker Terms
All-in
All-in is a term used to describe the move you make when you put all your chips into play. After this it’s a win or lose situation. If you win, you usually double up, if you don’t, you are out of the game.
Blinds
Blinds are stakes that have to be put in by the two persons left of the dealer. The amount of these stakes are agreed upon before the poker game starts. There are two different blinds: the Small Blind and the Big Blind. The player sitting left of the dealer is the Small Blind. The player sitting left of the Small Blind is the Big Blind.
Burning
Burning a card means a card is put out of play face down before drawing either a flop, turn or river.
Community Card
A community card is a card that’s on the board. It’s called a community card because every player that’s still in play can use it for making a hand.
Double Up
A Double Up means you doubled your stack size by going all-in and winning.
Flop
The flop is a term for the first three cards shown simultaneously by the dealer after the first round of betting has completed.
Kicker
Kickers are cards that can decide whether you’ve won a hand if there are two players with a similar hand. For example; if two players have the same pair (ie. both have fives), the other cards are the kickers. If the highest kicker of one player turns out to be higher than the highest kicker of the other player, the player with the highest kicker wins. If these highest kickers are equal, the second highest kickers are compared. Only if all the kickers are equal there will be a split pot.
Overcard
Overcards are cards with a higher rank than another. For example: if one player was to have JQ for a hand and another player has KA, then the second player has two overcards. It is only used for the pocket hands, since the community cards are the same for everyone.
The pocket is the hand you are dealt by the dealer in Texas Hold ‘Em.
Pot
The pot is the amount of chips in play. This is the amount of chips a player wins if he or she wins the hand.
Quads
An alternative term for the Four of a Kind.
River
This is the last card that will the drawn by the dealer. It is also known as the “Fifth Street”. After this card there will be one more round of betting before the showdown occurs.
Showdown
This is the moment that every player that’s still in the round will show his or her cards and the best hand is announced. A showdown is not possible if a certain bet or raise has not been called.
Split Pot
Split pot means the pot is divided between multiple players after the showdown is over. This only happens when the hands of multiple players are the same.
Stack
The stack is the amount of chips you possess at any given point during the game.
Trips
An alternative term for the Three of a Kind.
Turn
This is the fourth card that will be drawn by the dealer. It is also known as the “Fourth Street”.
Value Bet
A value bet is a bet that is based on the value of the pot. It will make it hard for other players to fold on, because the odds they get are always very good with value bets. For example, you bet 10 chips on a stack of 20 chips. The other players will only have to call 10 chips in order to win at least 30 chips. The idea behind this move is that other players will call you, so you make it as tempting as possible for the other players to do so.
